Capt. Arlie L. Miller - crash Austria - DNB 6 Sept 1951
 

Referring to https://tbo.newspapers.com/clip/3410...-arlie-miller/ I wonder what type of aircraft Capt. Arlie Leroy Miller (0-1329615) may have flown in the crash of 6 Sept. 1951. Location in Austria not specified.

According his Internment Report he was with the 7613th Flight Section, Tactical Command, U.S. Forces Austria (USFA). This section provided air liaison for the post-WW II American troops in Austria. L-5 or L-17 types most likely?

Hello Leendert,
The newspaper report ys he died on the 6th September as a result of a plane crash. Is it certain that he was killed actually on the 6th or was he involved in an accident that occurred at an earlier date ?

The nearest I could find so far is an L-5 on the 7th July '51 but Pilot name was Walter C Kennedy, it is possible that Miller was a passenger.
Looks like there were no fatalities with this accident.

Frequent references to Capt Walter C. Kennedy here http://www.gotech.at/lale9/langenlebarn_9_1.html but no mentioning of a crash on 7 July 1951 in otherwise very detailed history.
There was one on 6 Aug 50 with L-5 42-99357 (Major Harold Bergmann, hospitalized).

Kennedy's L-5 accident was in 44-99282, still in service in 1952 according above website.

Found this on a Salzburg Stadt Chronik 1945-1955 website:

6. August 1951
USFA-Flugzeug rammt ein Haus. Am Ostrand des Flugplatzes kracht ein notgelandetes
einmotoriges Flugzeug in das Haus Eichetstraße 6, das beschädigt wird. Der Pilot und sein
Flugschüler erleiden nur leichte Verletzungen.

Or: USFA airplane rams a house. A single-engined airplane, making an emergency landing at the eastern perimeter of the airfield, crashes into the house at Eichetstrasse 6, that got damaged. The pilot and his student (pilot) received minor injuries only.

Coincidende of dates (not year) or is something else not right?

Eichetstrasse is at Salzburg (1951) while accident in 1950 as on Gotech website at Heiligenstadt, Vienna.

Austrian newspapers from 1951 are online now too and could provide an answer.
Plane was an L-5 and Capt. Miller participated in joint French-US maneuvers. He crashed near Haldensee, which is close to the Austrian-German border, NW of Innsbruck, on 6 September.
This is as recorded in the Salzburger Nachrichten of 7 Sept 1951.
