Death of Oblt. Christian Wunder on 21 Feb. 1945

Good morning,

According to deZeng and Stankey, Oblt. Christian Wunder was "21.02.45 Oblt. and Staka 3./KG(J) 54, KIA during a fighter-bomber attack on Giebelstadt airfield."

Can anyone provide the details of the circumstances of his death? Was it in the air or on the ground?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

I./KG(J)/54 was based at Giebelstadt in Feb 45 so I would say an Allied attack on Giebelstadt.

Radtke page 232: The 8th US Air Force attacks Giebelstadt with P-47 Thunderbolts on the 21/2. The StKpt of 3./KG54 Oblt Wunder & the a/c Mechanic Ogefr Drews from the same Staffel are killed by bomb shrapnel while the a/c Mechanic of 2./KG54 Ogefr Pyttel is wounded while manning his anti-aircraft MG.

Thank you, Chris, Rod, Leo and Rudi for your quick replies. Oblt. Wunder was obviously killed on the ground on this date.
