Skorzeny's He111 crash 18/8/43 revisited!
Hi guys
Many moons ago I enquired about the alleged Skorzeny incident, when his He111 was supposedly shot down by RAF fighters on 18 August 1943. The aircraft ditched apparently off Olbia, Sardinia, from where all were rescued. Remi stated that he believed the Heinkel was Wrk.Nr.4745 of TG30. Perhaps Matti or others can confirm? Cheers Brian |

Hello Brian,
in the Gen.Qu. loss report from 29 August 1943 No.59 is listed: 18.8. T.Gr. 30, H, Ort: ostwärts Olbia-Süd, Ursache: Notlandung auf See infolge Motorstörung (Besatzung unverletzt gerettet) He 111 H WNr. 4745 100%. Regards Leo |
Re: Skorzeny's He111 crash 18/8/43 revisited!
No NVM was ever made, because there were no MIA, KIA or WIA in the aircraft. Therefore only the GQM info as mentioned by Brian and Leo is available. However, because this was the only reported He 111 loss in that area on that day it is a very good candidate.

Thanks Leo and Matti
OK, that confirms that the He111 was lost - but was Skorzeny a passenger? And was it shot down by RAF/US fighters? I've posted this latter enquiry and the Allied Forum as well! Cheers Brian |
Re: Skorzeny's He111 crash 18/8/43 revisited!
No.4 Was it shot down by RAF/US fighters?
No.2 Ursache: Notlandung auf See infolge Motorstörung - Cause: emergency landing at sea due to engine failure - no enemy action mentioned |
