According to the British Air Ministry Manual of German Air Force Terminology, it means officer supervisor, supervising officer or officer-in-charge.

Hello

Please take a look here : http://www.gotech.at/lale3/langenlebarn_3.html

An "Aufsicht" was in that case a subdivision (class in his scholar signification) of a Luftwaffe officers school (Air cadets), and the Aufsichtsoffizier was the man in charge of the operations and management of his subdivision.

More generally, this term has his origins in the officers training scheme of the German armies, dating from Friedrich II times, in the 17th century. The Aufsichtsoffizier was responsible of the day by day running of an officers school. Some semantic shift happened, and the words Aufsicht and Aufsichtsoffizier could also be used in other training units.

In the Luftwaffe, Aufsichtsoffiziere were usually experienced lieutnants or captains from operational units posted in a school / training unit, mainly for health reasons, and could assume other teaching duties, like navigation.

To be more specific, the name of the involved unit would be of help.

Hello Larry De ZENG and J Sch,

thanks for your quick and helpful answers.

I try to understand the carreer of a german pilote of ww2*: Lieutnant KÖHLER, Horst.

According to the Luftwaffe Officer Career Summaries of Henry L. deZeng IV and Douglas G. Stankey,
KÖHLER, Horst was «*appointed Aufsichtsoffizer the 01.03.41. LKS (unspecified 2?) (to 09.06.41).

21.2.42 appt Aufsichtsoffz. 03.42 appt Adj. to LKS 2 (to 09.44).*»

The Lieutnant KÖHLER was indeed badly injured in may 1940 and then appointed Aufsichtsoffizer in a Luftkriegschule.

Hello J Sch,

is the Aufsichtsoffizer a manager or an instructor of the class (in his scholar signification)* in the school / training unit?

Re: Aufsichtsoffizer, what is that*?

Hello

Basically, it's a manager job. In a training cursus, various elements, such as weather (a bigger concern in Germany or UK as in the USA or even southern France), planes availability, teachers/instructors availability must be taken in consideration and the theoretical schedules have to be modified / altered frequently. The Aufsichtsoffizier was also the first hierarchical level above his staff (flight instructors) and of course the pupils, and was in charge of the disciplinar questions. However, as far as I know, it was not seldom that the Aufsichtsoffizier assumed also teaching duties, in his own field of competences, depending on his previous background.
