5/ZG76 Me 110 loss 4th Oct 1943

Hello to all!

Can anyone supply me the Werke nummer and code letters for an Me 110G of 5/ZG76 shot down in combat on the 04.10.43? Sadly, the pilot, Lt. Hans Hetzer and his R/Op Uffz. Günther Barth were both killed.
Any information regarding this loss would be very much appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Melvin.

Hello RT!

Many thanks for getting in touch regarding the aircraft details of Lt. Hans Metzen, it is very much appreciated. The details I have regarding this loss originally came from the WASt report, info added to a written database of the II Gruppe ZG76, from this comes the 5th Staffel. The information came from a fellow researcher in Germany. Also the crash location I have is Simmerath, which is not too far from Lammersdorf I must apologize for my spelling error, some of the handwritten info is hard to read. If you are interested I can send you a scanned portrait photo of Hans Metzen.

A little additional information regarding the Metzen family. Hans had an identical twin brother, also a pilot in the Luftwaffe. Sadly, Fhj-Feldwebel Jakob Metzen was killed in action on the 14.02.1945 at Manze (Poland?) whilst serving with Gren. Rgt. 1238. If anyone out there knows which Luftwaffe unit he served with, I would be extremely interested.
Kind regards,

Melvin.

Hi Melvin...there is a point map of all the Me-110's shot down that day..my uncle, Uffz Haupt, flew with 2 ZG 6/76 and was shot down by Meckenheim by P-47's of the 63rd FG. There was also a well written article about this day entitled "A Black Day for the ZG 76"

Hi Mike

Thanks for getting in touch, much appreciated!
I found the loss regarding your uncle Emil and his R/Op, Uffz Leopold Berger in my loss list and was sorry to learn that they both perished in the crash of their Bf 110 near Meckenheim. I also note that I do not have the werke nummer for their aircraft either, do you possibly have it?

For the past twenty years I have been compiling a Luftwaffe Erinnerungs Archive, dedicated in preserving images, photos etc of Luftwaffe aircrew who were killed and those who are still listed as MISSING.
Most of the photos I have in my archive have come directly from the relatives of the fallen. I wonder if I may be bold enough to ask you if you could possibly send me a scan of your uncle Otto, if you have one?
I would be very pleased to include him in my Erinnerungs Archive. I must add that I am not political, my main interest is preserving the individual fatalities in the spirit of "Remembrance & Reconcilliation", regardless of nationality!

Kind regards,

Melvin.

Hi George...the article was written in the mid 90's by a researcher named Horst Schuh PhD...he led a group that uncovered remains of an ME110 of the leader of the 6/76 ZG Kapt Oskar Gehring. Some of the photos in this article are those provided by myself of my uncle's Me110. Gehring's crash site was near Euskirchen Mike

Thank you, Mike. Would there be any way to get hold of a copy of the article. It sounds interesting.
