Claims of 2nd Lt Evasio Cavalli- Sardinia 14 May 1943
 

Hello All,

I am interested in the two claims made by S/Ten Evasio Cavalli as reported in "Mediterranean Air War." Volume 4. The place names of the shoot down ate P.ta Salina - P.ta Manna and Solli Island. I have been unsuccessful pinning down these locations. Does anyone have an idea?

My best guess is Punta della Salina, on isola di Sant'antioco. I have no idea what Solli Island is. Could it be Isola Soffi? The units involved in fighting that day are the 82d Fighter Group, 14th Fighter Group and 1st Fighter Group, and S/Ten Cavalli was in the 355 sq/24 gr.

Hi,
unfortunately, the names are spelled as such in the mission report. My best guess is that Isola Solli really is Soffi Island, near the north-eastern coast of Sardinia. Punta Manna and Punta Salina are rather common names in Sardinia, being the peaks of small mountains. They should be near Olbia.
