Ship buffs: Arado on Bismarck?

Hello all,

Can anyone identify the ship in the below picture of an Ar 196? It is described as coming out of a container but I think it is one of the two side hangars as fitted to Bismarck, in addition to a larger hangar. Boats were stored on top. I am not sure if Tirpitz had the same arrangement.

Thanks,

Peter,
you could be right. It could be the port side hangar beside the chimney for one Ar196 on both, Tirpitz and Bismark.

Hi Chris. It must be the single hangar on the starboard side under the funnel as the doors face the stern and the boats on top face forward; the double hangar was under the mainmast. Note the distinctive Bismarck / Tirpitz pitched roof.

This is a very good model but it also shows the deck layout well..............

The hangar design is here...............

Some nice close-up details, the main double hangar is on image no.29.........

I think the 2 ships were similar apart from some details.

Thanks! So, it's the starboard hangar on Bismarck or Tirpitz, but which one is impossible to tell unless someone has details on the photo.

Peter. I think it's "Bismarck", this is "Tirpitz" and there are a few detail differences on the superstructure ( note the crane to the right of the hangar has been removed also).

Thank you Nick!

It looks to me like the model Bismark has the planes facing the wrong way in the hangers. According to the diagram all planes face aft, and when a plane comes out of the forward hangers it comes out nose first and when a plane comes out of the aft hangers it comes out tail first. Or am I missing something?

Rolland. The planes in the main (double) hangar went in nose-first at an angle facing the stern, if the other way round the tailplanes would touch. I think he turned them round for a better effect.
The ones in the side hangars went in tail-first as in the original photo.

Couldn't remember where I saw these plans by Hans Gally. They are TIRPITZ but hangar is same layout. Go down to Rob Wood's post July 30 2013; top drawing shows the main hangar with tracks to the catapult , stern to the left (note curved doors). Lower plan shows inside of hangar with Arado stowed facing stern (to left), and limited space inside.

I found back the photo in the book Adler über See by Christian König, and with due respect for your conclusions Nick, another photo in very probably the same sequence is said to be from Tirpitz.
