I agree that it looks like LN-U. 42-9738 not a B-17 serial number 42-31049 returned to the states Has to be 42-30335, crash landed Sept 6,1943 |

Sorry, it was a typo, I was gonna say 42-29738 which was assigned to the 100 BG indeed, however, later it went to 303 BG and lost over the North Sea, so obviously it could not be the one in the pic.
