"Mustang" Crash, 7 Jan 1945, 1130 Hrs
Hello One & All,
in the captured German Dulag Luft files was a folder relating, according to the index prepared post-war by US authorities, to a Mustang crash as follows: 7 January, 1130 hrs, Mustang, crashed at Dreifelden near Westerburg, report ref J-2859, 1, 2. Does any one have any idea what aircraft this report may actually refer to? There does not appear to have been a Mustang crash on that day in the area concerned... Cheers Rod |

Rod, Horst
on 07.01.1945 two B-17 of 95.BG (43-38551, 334.BS, MACR 11569) and 96.BG (43-38968, 338.BS, MACR 11571) collided over this area. The crash locations are both given with Hintermühlen, 3 km SE of Dreifelden. Maybe one or both of these a/c disintegrated. Interesting: a local report mentions that "an four engined a/c" crashed near Rothenbach, 1 km SW of Hintermühlen, and an a/c of unknown type near Dreifelden on this day. The only P-51 loss on this day was 44-14274, 55.FG, 38.FS, last seen near Dordrecht/NL. Regards Heuser |
Re: "Mustang" Crash, 7 Jan 1945, 1130 Hrs
Hi Horst, Heruser,
thanks for the replies, particlarly about the B17 losses. KE 10140 relates to a Lancaster lost on the night of 6-7 Jan 1945, and I suspect that in the Dulag Luft file J 2859, there is a signal listing crashes, from which this reference has been erroneously added in the US index to the loss at Dreifingen. I am specifically interested in the list of crashes to see what may be in the signal besides KE 10139. The MACRs mentioned are a good starting place, thanks. Rod |
