That such book is actually written shows that perversity knows no limits. If the author Lewis's claim is applied objectively, any combatant must be allowed to commit any kind of massacre to "prevent even greater losses". To give such a privilege to only gum chewers would be an insult to justice.

Re: Timely Publication (Off Topic)

President Truman, and military planners at the time, could hardly grasp the idea of a single bomb causing such great damage, not to mention the effects of lingering radiation. Shortly after the two bombs were dropped, certain high-ranking persons in the US military stated such weapons were not needed. Our temporary ally, the Russians, invaded Manchuria on 9 August 1945, creating additional problems for the Japanese. Today, apologists for the use of two atomic bombs in war and none since then, are still not convincing.

Best,
Ed

'Never judge a book by the publisher's blurb' would be my advice!

Easy to say, Jukka. It wouldn't have been hundreds of thousands of Finns who died in an invasion of the Japanese mainland, but rather Americans, Aussies, Brits and New Zealanders. Perhaps we should all read the book.

How about forgetting the idiotic "unconditional surrender" policy?

We know now it (and the possibility of Soviet invasion) weighted at least as much on Japan's decision. I wonder if this book will mention that :o .

Reading it would be the best way to find out!

I know people enjoy an argument for its own sake but seriously, what are the chances of this thread going anywhere? Is it likely to reach a definitive conclusion when 75 years of historiography haven’t.

Book aimed at making a single point are not my kind of reading.
Fact is I wonder, but don't really care.
