Crash Landed Hurricane

From German E-Bay. A crash landed Hurricane that the seller states is from 151 Sq w/ pilot PO Bush.
Observations. The code looks like SE or SF, which does not match up with 151 Sq. 151 Squadron used "DZ'" from 1939-1946

Welcome any comments.

Sorry, wrong forum.

Re: Crash Landed Hurricane

Hi,
Could it be a 501 squadron hurricane?
They used SD on their hurricanes.

Re: Crash Landed Hurricane

I thought of that but the last letter doesn't look like a "D"? Maybe the D has been partially altered due to the crash?

Re: Crash Landed Hurricane

SE was never a Hurricane code. SF was, but only on Mk.IVs, which this one isn't, and not in this time-scale. I'd go with SD.

Is it not "SO" 145Sqn? They flew Hurricanes...

Kaki

I spontanously read SD code, and concluded it looks like a photo taken during the Battle of France.
501 Sq was in France while 145 Sq (SO) was not.
I also feel an O would be more rounded, but the photo angle (including rear damage) can play tricks, we have seen that before....

Not conclusive but my bet is on 501 Sq never-the-less :)

Cheers
Stig

ok, I will go with 501 Squadron. Maybe I can identify it further. It sure looks like a Battle of France Hurricane.

Re: Crash Landed Hurricane

The problem with 501 Sqn version is that the serial number of SD-A is well known - L2045, and it seems that this aircraft was not shot down over France (from my notes, which could be incomplete). And 145 Sqn participated in combat over France flying from Britain. So I think this aircraft is SO-A of 145 Sqn

Perhaps someone can convince the seller to put the watermark in a different place to make the code a bit clearer ..........

Re: Crash Landed Hurricane

I am certain this is a 501 Squadron Hurricane, coded SD-A. I have seen several other photos of this wreck but none with the code - or serial - any better. 501 Squadron almost uniquely used very large letters as shown here. Do not forget that due to losses 501 Squadron used at least two 'SD-A's while stationed. It appears L2045 was the first SD-A due to the dates it was damaged plus the fact there was time for it to be returned to England. There is a photo of L2045 on page 320 of 'THE BATTLE OF FRANCE, THEN AND NOW' by Peter Cornwell. Very neat paintwork on that Hurricane as one might expect.
