Re: Plt Off Green 49 Sqn
Hello,
Possibly, 42748 F/O (Pilot) John Henry GREEN DFC RAF - POW 10/11-2-1941 - BCL2/20. 27/28 October 1940 HAMBURG. Again the squadron was successful with 6 out of the 8 aircraft dispatched hitting the primary target of Hamburg; the remaining 2 bombed alternative targets. The squadron's troubles only really began when they arrived back over England. German intruder aircraft were abroad, and the area around Lincoln was always a favourite hunting ground for them. Sgt [sic] Green (X3001*) and crew were attacked whilst orbiting the 'Q' site; the damage sustained by the Hampden included all 3 tyres burst and the accumulators shot out. Fortunately the pilot was able to make a successful emergency landing without injury to himself or crew. 12/13 November 1940 Shortly before 09.00hrs, P/O Green (X3001*) and crew informed the watch office that they thought there was a problem with their undercarriage. The pilot decided to give his crew, consisting of Sgt's Hirst, Hugget and McIver, the opportunity of baling out over the satellite airfield at Dunholme Lodge - which they did. P/O John Green then proceeded to make a normal landing at Scampton, touching down at 09.09hrs. Both crew and aircraft were reported as OK. * Hampden I, X3001:EA-H See: Beware of the Dog at War - An Operational Diary of 49 Squadron. Ward,John Belper:JoTe Publications,1997 pp.61 & 65. Col. |
