New Tirpitz book released

Hi all.

I have just released a book co-authored with Kriegsmarine-expert John Asmussen on the battleship Tirpitz. This is the largest and longest (A4-format and 368 pages) book on Tirpitz ever, indeed on any Kriegsmarine ship. It contains some 600 illustrations, of which 390 are photos (more than 130 are previously unpublished). The rest consists of various line drawings, camouflage schemes, aircraft profiles and 3D-renditions (the first of Tirpitz published). We also have a list of casualities and forces involved in the hunt for Tirpitz.

While strictly not an aviation book it contains colour profiles of all aircraft involved in bombing and recce-raids on the Tirpitz, as well as a chapter on Soviet bombing and recce-missions flown against the Tirpitz, something which has barely been touched upon before. This is based on primary rersearch by well-known VVS-expert Rune Rautio. We are also delighted to present a specially commisioned Pe-3-drawing by Erik Pilawskii which incorporates the latest in colour research (from preserved specimens stored by Bodø Aviation Msueum) and exact and new measurements which invalidates older drawings.

There's also a separate chapter devoted to the Arado Ar 196, with lots of photos and three colour profiles.

There are also one chapter on Bardufoss airfield which contains new, previously unpublished photos of the airfield and aircraft stationed there. Perhaps most relevant to this forum is the chapter dealing with the events of November 12th 1944 when the Luftwaffe failed to intercept the Lancasters which sunk the Tirpitz. We have a detailed analysis of the events, based on interviews with German pilots, log books and transcripts from the court martial which followed the sinking.

The book should interest anyone with an maritime and aviation interest, and definitely those who combines the two!

The book is published by Midt-Troms Museum and is only available dircetly from us. Price is 490,- NOKs plus p & p (which we be revised and published tomorrow). The main text is in Norwegian only, but all photo and illustration captions are bilingual (Norwegian and English) and the main text is currently under translation and will be available as a free PDF-download as soon as possible.

The book can be ordered directly from us at:

Does the museum take credit cards or Paypal ? If not, I am in the US, how do I pay for it?

Dear Mr. Davis.

Unfortunately, we do not have access to payPal or credit card system (it is too expensive for a museum such as ours) so we have to rely on bank transfer.

If you go to the order page I linked to and order the book you'll receive an email with payment instructions and bank details.

You can also see here for more sample pages of the booK:

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Kjetil
