601 Squadron loss 30th September 1943 ?
 
Hello,

Serial number and Mark ( VIII or IX ?) of a 601 Squadron Spitfire lost into the Med on 30th of September 1943 please.

Pilot, Sgt. Donald Rosslyn MACKAY known to have been recovered by ship and returned to the UK for cremation. Name of Ship and date of cremation please ?

This was being discussed over on the RAF Commands forum and the story above was a suggestion only by the late Henk Welting, researcher.

Review of the ORB for 601 Sqn back to April 1943 does not show MacKay as a pilot.

His death is registered in the Battersea district of London, whereas if his dead remains had been landed one might expect it to be at a port on the south coast.

it is most likely that he was injured earlier in the war prior to 601 moving to the Medd and that he died from these or other injuries/illness. Only his death cert would provide the corect answer but who has the cash to be radomly buying death certs here and there, not me for one.
