My interest in Lehrgeschwaders 1 goes back to May 13, 1944 when Joachim Helbig and his Flyers bombed the American air base at Alesani, Corsica.

My father was on the ground as the Helbig Flyers hammered the field for a full hour and a half.

Peter Taghon collected first-person accounts of the raid as the German crews saw it.

For those who do not read German, I have translated the pages from Mr. Taghon's book related to the duel raids on Borgo-Poretta and Alesani.

They can be found here: http://www.dansetzer.us/taghon/Korsika_index.htm

Thank you Col Bruggy and Nick Beale for the additional documentation. I was aware that there were casualties at Borgo-Poretta, but my main focus was Alesani since my father was there.

The men at Alesani saw the flashes of light in the night sky toward the north and knew that someone was getting hit. No one guessed that the Germans would, or even could, return the same night for another strike.

Just taken a bit of a leap of faith and bought Volume 1 to assist with the research of an LG1 Bordschutze (Richard Hackethal) that I have a lovely Ehrenpokal and Flugbuch collection too. Worked out over £50 with p&p but I have to say, this is one of the most lavishly illustrated and best unit histories I’ve seen. Worth every damned penny....wish I spoke French a bit better but google translate works a treat on the phone. I doubt Mr Taghon will read this but I’d like to say a very well done for producing such an outstanding book. Merci
