VDK database

Hi all,

Can someone tell me if the VDK online database (the German equivalent of the CWGC) actually contains anything?
Whatever name I put into it, I never get a result. Even the most common German name does not yield a result.

To be honest, I get the impression that it is just conceived to pass any questions to the form where you can ask the same question but where the search is against payment.

Best regards

Re: VDK database

There are about 4.8 Million records in it. It will give you basic information like name, date of birth, date of death and of course grave location if known. However, you must realize this is far from complete and ONLY lists the dead that are buried in Military Cemeteries or plots.

I think you're doing something wrong. Can you make a screenshot after you have filled in the names in the search field?

I have never had a problem but you must register and tick boxes first

Re: VDK database

Again, military personnel killed in Germany and handed over to their relatives to be buried in private graves are normally not listed in the database. Furthermore only a very limited amount of personnel that are MIA are listed.

Re: VDK database

Hi all,

One recent search that didn't yield a result was the one for Fw Horst Bilfinger. There is a cross erected for him in the Belgan region bordering Germany. This was the location where he crashed on 17 August 1943 during the famous Schweinfurt-Regensburg mission. He was buried at the 1914-1918 military cemetery at Eupen and I would like to know if he is still buried there. I think he is still buried there and I am planning to visit the site. So I put in first name, last name and date of death in the appropriate boxes but zero result.

Where do I need to register to consult the database? I don't see anything in the menu where I can register.

Thanks to all for the help

Luc

I think you're doing something wrong, Luc.

First you full in the data of the person you're looking for:

The the VDK asks you for your info:

Don't forget to tickle the last box in the screen:

After that you should be able to see this:

When you hit the appropiate name (you might end up with a lot of names in the search result), you get this:

Hope this helps.

And dear forum members....it would be perfectly okay to send them a check so now and then. This is an organization that largely runs on gifts.....
