Luftwaffe South (MTO) warning system...

HI all,

I am wondering if anyone can write me as detailed as possible procedure and equipment /location of warning for LUftwaffe units like 8.JD and others protecting south Reich area (Hngary, Austria, Slovakia, ...) against 15.AAF "intruders".
Wich radars were involved, their locations, who get the info as first etc...
Thanks!!!

Hi,

Please have a look at:
http://www.gyges.dk/Flum%20and%20Jagd.htm

and follow the links to "SE Europe" and "Mediterranean" the information is based on German sources from BAMA, but can only be found - if at all - with difficulty in published literature.

Peter,

Hungary had their own developed and manufactured radars also, but the Hungarian fighter command got the info from the Germans too (their radars were more south)

Hi werner,

I am aware of your excellent site and I am going to do an update. The basic info I've worked from is from the spring of 1944 with some later additions and it does need some work over. I'm going to add Austria at the soonest.

Werner,

excellent site. I knew it, but never actually had time to go page by page...If I knew it, I do not have to ask "stupid" questions on forum;)

GOOD WORK

Hi Werner,
Done a few corrections, but it did not add much to Austria. On your map you have:
SCHIMMEL
HUND
BLAUFUCHS
HENNE
which do not appear on your above listing, could you please clarify.

Re: Luftwaffe South (MTO) warning system...

not all of Austria was in the Luftgau XVI Wien (Vienna), two of the federal states were attached to the Luftgau VII München (Muinch) - Tirol (Tyrol ) and Vorarlberg. => two Kompanien of III/Lg.Nachr.Rgt.227 with Innsbruck and Lend bei Zell am See were not part of 8.Jagddivision ( Salamander & Schimmel )

Hund, Henne and Blaufuchs: AFAIK it is not really clear which units operated them, but all of them were in high mountains and they were also late war operated sites.
