Dutch Do.24K X-16 lost 1/3/42
Hi guys
Can anyone tell me about the loss of this aircraft. Apparently it was on its way to Ceylon on an evacuation flight from Java via Sumatra, since it was lost over the Indian Ocean. Who were the crew? How many passengers and who were they, and from where? Any information appreciated. Cheers Brian |

Hi Bruce
Thanks for that but another reliable source mentions that X-16 was damaged and repaired on 1 March before departing for presumably Ceylon. Cheers Brian |

Brian
I know there are conflicting sources about the loss of this aircraft. Tom Womack in his the Dutch Naval Air Force Against Japan cannot decide which one he should believe, since in the main text state he has the aircraft exploding in the air while on its way to Ceylon (odd place to try and evacuate yourself to, in my mind), but in his appendix gives both versions for that same specific aircraft. What is odd, is that so far no one has come up with a single name of anyone onboard, not even the NCO who was the single survivor and obviously reached India. B Rgds Stig |

Hi Stig
Good to hear from you. The RAF NCO survivor was Sgt Percy Tottle. Cheers Brian |
Re: Dutch Do.24K X-16 lost 1/3/42
Thanks Brian
That was new to me. I presume the whole escape story then has its origin in him? I also take it his report is available to you, and that he does not mention any other names. Since I am curious why they all tried to reach Ceylon instead of Oz, did he mention the reason for this? A bit odd that the Dutch are unable to come up with the name of the crew. The militaries usually keep good track of their staff, even in defeat. B Rgds Stig |
Re: Dutch Do.24K X-16 lost 1/3/42
Hi Stig
The story is to be found in Barker's book "Down in the Drink". No others properly identified. The pilot is mentioned as 'Jan'. A connection possibly with McCormac's escape story "You'll Die in Singapore" The mystery remains. Research on-going! Cheers Brian |
Re: Dutch Do.24K X-16 lost 1/3/42
I see Brian
So all we got is information from other books? I also noticed why Womack sort of feels his feet are wet. No first hand source here, but quoting from Shores et al's Bloody Shambles. In fact he even speculates all this may refer to another aircraft completely, while the story in itself might be true. I can of course speculate in theories of mư own, but without any real sources I will not. Any Dutch people around who knows more?? Cheers Stig |

Hi Stig
If one could refer to official sources for every query that arises there would not be any useful need for researchers like us! Life would be boring! Cheers Brian PS I co-authored Bloody Shambles. |
