He111 1H+DN of 5/KG26 lost 16 May 1940

Hi guys

I would appreciate some help from our Norwegian or other knowledgeable friends regarding the above, please.

Apparently it was shot down by a Skua and belly-landed on a frozen lake at Sitajaure in Sweden. Is this correct? The crew were reported seen swimming and I have a note that all five survived. Is this correct? Who were they and were they interned?

Fingers crossed.
Cheers
Brian

Thanks Robert

The website I consulted is apparently at fault with the date regarding 1H+DN, so was another II/KG26 aircraft belly-landed in Sweden on 16 May?

Also on 16 May, 6/KG30 lost two Ju88s to Skuas - do we know the identities and fates of the crews?

Cheers

Hi Brian
I think one of the Ju 88's ditched west of Narvik:

The website has the date wrong! He 111H Wnr. (2501?) 1H+DN did bellyland in Sweden 16. may 1940!

Just sources:
Book. Nödlandning Sverige, and GQM Verluste von Opeartiven Verbände! Both agree to 16!

Brian,

The crews of the two Ju88s of 6./KG30 lost over Narvik on May 16, 1940, were as follows:

(Ff) Hptmn Gunter NOLL (Stakap) British PoW - sent to Canada.
(Beo) Fw Hubert TRIMBORN British PoW - sent to Canada.
(Bf) Fw Willi SCHELL PoW - returned to unit August 19, 1940.
(Bs) Fw Ernst KUBLER (1 Wart) killed - buried Narvik.

(Ff) Lt Heinrich DIERMEYER British PoW.
(Beo) Gefr Georg SCHUTZ returned to unit June 13, 1940.
(Bf) Uffz Anton SCHLOSSER returned to unit June 13, 1940.
(Bs) Gefr Heinrich KOCH (1 Wart) returned to unit June 13, 1940.

I have no details on the He111 of 5./KG26 lost that day. Sorry.

Hi Brian, Flyvrak, ju55dk and Peter,

I know the Ju88´s are not the main issue of this thread but re-reading the Flyvrak page (and other posts abowe) and comparing to Shores & co-authors descripion of events 16.05.40 (says that one was force landed on mountainside <on land> and one into the sea at Narvik), makes me wonder if there was perhaps an third Ju88 down into the sea near Narvik (15.05.40) and that losing two of its crew - and the Flyvrak description of events at Vassvikna perhaps fitting that one!

(Paragraph delated as that refers to I/KG 30 on Western-Front, not Norway and Z/KG 30)

In my notes I have possibly Ju 88 C 0154 4D+RH as lost on that date ´at Narvik´.

cheers

Thanks Peter and Ed

Ed - I have note that a Skua claimed a He111 possibly shot down over Narvik on 15 May, and a Ju88 claimed shot down over Narvik on 16 May (both by the same pilot and noted in his logbook). I wonder if (a) the entry is wrong and the Z/KG30 Ju88 was actually lost on 16th, or (b) if the He111 possible on the 15th was actually the Ju88! Of course, neither has to be the case!

Peter - do you have a Z/KG30 Ju88 loss to match Ed's suggestion?

Cheers
Brian
