JG 27 combat over Greece, November 1943
I am seeking information about a 15th Air Force mission to Greece on November 15th, 1943. USAAF P-38 Lightnings escorted B-24s to bomb the Eleusis aerodrome, near Athens. At some point the escorts were engaged by Bf 109s of JG 27.
Although the German pilots were credited with no less than fourteen P-38s shot down, the actual losses amounted to only two Lightnings. One plane was P-38F s/n 43-2184 from the 1st Fighter Group, 15th Air Force, and the other was F-5A s/n 42-13275 from the 5th Photo Recon Group, 12th Air Force. Does anyone know the names of the two American pilots and the circumstances of their loss? |
At least according to Prien/Rodeike/Stemmer, the claims were split in two time periods.
4 P-38s 11:24 - 11:35 10 P-38s 13:10 - 13:17 This would indicate two separate operations. |
