Need the identity of a unnamed LW Oberst;
Guys:
I am reading Arthy & Jessen's new book about FW 190s during the battle for Sicily. I came across a recollection by Fritz Schroeter about an allied bombing raid on the airfield at Vibo Valentia on July 16, 1943; a large collection of LW fighters & fighter bombers was devastated by the raid. Schroeter recalled he met a Luftwaffe Oberst who was a 'fighter pilot of great fame', who ended up totally demoralized by this raid. I was curious if Andrew, Morten or anybody else knows the identity of this Oberst. |
Re: Need the identity of a unnamed LW Oberst;
Hi Nick,
Hope you're enjoying the book! I'm pretty sure that the famous fighter pilot referred to by Schröter on 16 July 1943 is von Maltzahn. Schröter told a couple of other stories about von Maltzahn (we included one of them in our downloadable electronic article about Fritz Schröter). Cheers, Andrew A. Re: Need the identity of a unnamed LW Oberst;
Thanks; I didn't even know Von Maltzahn achieved a Colonel's rank.
