Need the identity of a unnamed LW Oberst;

Guys:

I am reading Arthy & Jessen's new book about FW 190s during the battle for Sicily. I came across a recollection by Fritz Schroeter about an allied bombing raid on the airfield at Vibo Valentia on July 16, 1943; a large collection of LW fighters & fighter bombers was devastated by the raid. Schroeter recalled he met a Luftwaffe Oberst who was a 'fighter pilot of great fame', who ended up totally demoralized by this raid. I was curious if Andrew, Morten or anybody else knows the identity of this Oberst.

Hi Nick,

Hope you're enjoying the book!

I'm pretty sure that the famous fighter pilot referred to by Schröter on 16 July 1943 is von Maltzahn. Schröter told a couple of other stories about von Maltzahn (we included one of them in our downloadable electronic article about Fritz Schröter).

Cheers,
Andrew A.

Thanks; I didn't even know Von Maltzahn achieved a Colonel's rank.
