German film with captured Spitfire

In 1940-41, the Germans made a propaganda film that used a captured RAF Spitfire. Stills from this film, showing the Spitfire in the same frame as a Bf 109E and, in another still, a Do 17Z have been used as illustrations in many books.

The Spitfire is close enough to the camera to show that it has over-size "B" (re-blue) roundels on its upper wing inboard of the usual position as well as "B" roundels on the fuselage. It lacks squadron codes.

Does anyone know
- When was this film made, its title, and whether it still exists?
- The identity of the captured Spitfire used?
- Was this the same film that also featured air-to-air scenes with a French Hawk 75 painted in RAF markings (also photographed in-fame with a Do 17Z)?

thanks,
David Isby

David -
There is a Photo of an " Early Spitfire " flown by the Luftwaffe.
Code CJ + ZY. It was fitted with a Daimler-Benz DB 601 Engine.
Book : On Special Missions , Luftwaffe's Research and Experimental Squadron Page 78
The other 3 Luftwaffe Spitfires , 2 IXs and 1 XI-PR were Captured 1942 - 44.

Re: German film with captured Spitfire

Hi David
It would appear that there were 2 Spitfires used in propoganda films by the Germans. I do not have any dates for these films but certain that they would not have titles as such. They were made for the News-reel films for the cinema etc. The 1st Spitfire was used with a Bf109E on it's tail with the markings G-X and at the same time the same film unit also filmed ex-French H-75s with fake RAF markings. I am not sure if the Spitfire was also used in the same full length Film alongside the Hawks(Sorry cannot locate my files for the Films name). The other Spitfire used with the filming of a He111 & Do17Z was a later Mark. Again no other details for dates or identity.

Re: German film with captured Spitfire

The Curtiss was flown by my friend Hans Wilhelm Schopper, a great opportunity as his flight pay was supplemented by the film company. We had quite a laugh when he related exploring the cockpit while flying. He sniffed a tube, learning it was a relief tube! He also flew the spitfire, admiring it all his days. Extra footage was made eventually appearing in a segment of the weekly show, to the amusement of his family. Our mutual friend Herbert Kaiser also flew the spitfire. Both lost contact in 1942, and I was able to reconnect them in the early 1980's. The film was "kampfgeschwader Lutzow. A fictional unit.
