Overturned Hurricane Battle of France?

From E-Bay. Overturned Hurricane probably in France. White "N" on fuselage.
Any ideas as to unit?

If you rotate the picture right side up, it may be a "W".

Interesting how the film changed the color/contrast of the roundel. Yellow, Blue, White, Red, but the Yellow outer ring looks darker then the Blue inner ring.

That's what happens to orthochromatic film, which is very sensitive to red but much less so to blue. The Yellow paint contains just enough red to appear dark.

I see why a W is likely, but that's still an unusually thick and short letter, and where is the rest of the code? Very distinctive.

73 Squadron had a "W". In this photo the rudders are painted red/white/blue.

In kaki's photo the vertical fin is painted.

All,

501Sqn came to mind with the thin fin flash - not rudder. They also had wide squadron markings. As a replacement the SD might not have been added.

Seems to have been well used though - cordite on the shell exits.
Single black wing. Does not seem to be the 50/50 black/white.

Late spring/early summer with full leaf - May/June 1940?

Assume that in partially in a pond?

Flaps down - landing?

Alex: the high fin flash was normal immediately after it had been required (May 1st 1940). Usually it covered the whole of the fin rather than the small flag it became later.

I think that the other wing does look white, and there is a demarcation down the centre of the radiator. I grant you that the centre-section doesn't look black in this view, though I suppose it could be glare?.
