The following website may be of interest
http://www.saafmuseum.co.za/historysaaf.htm in part it states Nearer to home the SAAF supported the RAF in the British invasion on Vichy held Madagascar in May 1942. Two flights, equipped with Marylands and Beauforts, operated in ground support and reconnaissance roles. The SAAF played a vital role in photographing the island prior to the invasion. The operation ended in November 1942. Another website http://www.combinedops.com/MADAGASCAR.htm This is a brief account of Operation Ironclad from the viewpoint of a member of No 5 Commando. Combined Operations Command was not the principal player in this operation against the Vichy French regime - more of an assistant. The total campaign lasted 6 months but the bulk of the special work of Combined Operations and the Commandos was concentrated into a few days in early May 1942. A more comprehensive description of the action will be added to this page in due course of which this account will form a part. Now to Geoff Riley's story.. Kind regards Ross |
