He111 with code RG shot down 11 June 1940
Hi guys
Further to my earlier enquiry about a He111 being shot down by a 145 Squadron Hurricane pilot on 11 June 1940, I now have access to his combat report which states that the pilot saw the letters RG on the side of the Heinkel floating in the sea. Any ideas, please? Cheers Brian |
Re: He111 with code RG shot down 11 June 1940
According to The Battle Of France Then & Now by Peter D Cornwell there is no record of a HE-111 being shot down into the sea on the 10, 11 or 12th June 1940. Unless it is a factory or experimental code I believe RG would indicate the Staffel & aircraft in that Staffel rather than the Geshwader.

A Wekusta 51 He111 was reported missing over the Channel on 12-6-40. Could'nt find a loss of a He111 over the sea on the 11th.

Thanks Brian
Definitely not the Wekusta 51 machine. Possibly a Ju88? Or could it have been an RAF bomber? Was there a code RG or similar for BC squadron? Another possiblity I suppose is that the Heinkel make have been damaged by French AA and flew out to sea, meeting the Hurricane? The mystery deepens .................! Cheers Brian |
