Who shot down Rudi Pflanz? 2./JG2

Does anyone have access to an RAF account of the action in which Rudi Pflanz JG2 was shot down?

Oberleutnant Pflanz was appointed Staffelkapitän of 11./JG 2 on 1 May 1942. On 5 June, he shot down three Spitfires over the Somme Estuary. He recorded his 49th and 50th victories when he shot down two further Spitfires on 28 July. On 31 July 1942, Pflanz engaged in combat with Spitfires. He succeeded in shooting down one but was then shot down and killed in Bf 109 G-1 (W.Nr. 10318) “White 1” over Berck-sur-Mer in France.

Leo,

Thanks very much for this info! I have been told that gun-camera footage survives of the actual shoot down, I need to delve some more...

Hi there,

@Leo,
Can you precise the crash place please?
Monchaux-sur-Écaillon, Moncheaux (both in 59, Nord) or Moncheaux-lès-Frévent (62, Pas-de-Calais)??

Thanks and regards, Franck.

Who shot down Rudi Pflanz?

Hello Franck

I can only add that the original QM 6 document lists the loss location as being Berck sur Mer so it must be the
Moncheaux nearest to that location. I hope this helps.

Horrido!

Re: Who shot down Rudi Pflanz? 2./JG2

Hello Leo,

:D, I have Monchaux-lès-Quend, north of baie de Somme and Monchaux-Soreng, south of baie de Somme, too!

In my own lost list it was just written Monchaux (without "e"). The nearest of Berck being Monchaux-lès-Quend. South of Berck, North of Le Crotoy. I suppose that one then.

Cheers, Franck.

Who shot down Rudi Pflanz?

Hello username

The only information that I was able to find about the American pilot you are interested in is that contained on the 4th Fighter Group web site: http://www.fourthfightergroup.com/resource/kelly.html. Apparently the only claim that he is credited with is that recorded on 31 July 1942. What new information has come to light suggesting that he was the fellow who downed Pflanz?

Horrido!

Re: Who shot down Rudi Pflanz?

Thanks Leo, for the info on Kelly.
A strange coincidence is that I work 100 meters from the airfield where 121 Sq was based during July/August 1942.
I have seen copies of the Personal Combat Report of Sgt. WP Kelly relating to the action that brought down Pflanz.
