KG1 in France - Sept. to Nov. 1942

Hi,

I make a research work about Avord airfield, located in the middle of France. Today this place is an air base for the French "Armée de l'Air" and on the air base exist a small museum, telling the history of Avord during this last years.

A few years ago a former pilot of the German Luftwaffe came to visit Avord air base, one place where was its unit during the last war. This pilot, Herr Hecht, said to the staff museum that its unit, the (?) III./KG1 "Hindenburg" with Ju-88 bombers was at Avord from September to November 1942. It showed three pictures the day of its visit showing Ju88 on the field. According to all sources which I have consulted, the III./KG1 was to the east front at this time !

For me that can be also the 3./KG1 because the museum’s staff perhaps badly translated the words of the pilot. I./KG1 was at Rennes, Fr. and was perhaps at Avord before going to Russia?

Do you have more information on this subject?

All the best,
Frederic

According to my information the only unit located at Avord airfield in the autumn of 1942 was IV./K.G.4.
