Five Wellington losses 30-31 May 1942, 1,000 Bomber Raid on Köln

Dear all,

For the NJWD 2nd edition, I'm currently re-writing the narrative plus Nachtjagd & Flak claims listings for the 30-31 May 1942 1,000 Bomber Raid on Köln (Cologne), and have five Wellington losses for which I have not yet been able to find a crash location, probably all in Germany:

12 Sqn Wellington Z8376
12 Sqn Wellington Z8643
22 OTU Wellington R1714
103 Sqn Wellington DV452
142 Sqn Wellington Z1208

Who can help?

Cheers and thanks for any info, Theo

Z8376 is often noted as crashing near Düsseldorf, for example in Air Britain serials of RAF aircraft

Martin

Hello Martin,

Thanks for your reply -I have five unmatched confirmed Flak claims of the 4. Flak Division (covering the Ruhr) for 30-31 May 1942, which most probably fit to these five bomber losses, and would therefore like to have precise info re. the crash locations of these 'heavies'.

Cheers, Theo

There is a older book on this operation called "The Thousand Plane Raid" by Ralph Barker which may have some information on the downing of these 5 aircraft.

Thanks for your reply James, but no specific info on the crash locations of the five Wimpeys in this source I'm afraid ..

Cheers, Theo

Didn't John Foreman do a FlyPest article on the 1,000 bomber raid on cologne back in the 80s which dealt with some of the individual losses?
