Any percentage figures on this topic Germany vs. Italy vs. U.S:A. vs. Britain vs. U.S.S.R vs. Japan? How did the figures compare e.g. in 1938, 1942, 1944?

I think the Germans were slow to 'catch up' with Allied nations when it came to the employ of female labour. I know my grandmother was not forced into working at the Fieseler Werke until 1944.

My mother was a foreign forced laborer in Germany for the duration of the war. Her country had ceased to exist. Young people were rounded up and put on train cars. There was a "supervisor" in each car. All she was told was that upon entering Germany, she would throw out her one allowed piece of luggage at a certain point, then she was told how and when to jump. The train would not stop, it would only slow down.

Good question. I remember reading that due to Nazi doctrine that the place of the women was at home raising children, Germany was slow to include women in its workforce, but I must say that every example I have seen with figures seem to show the contrary, like the above figure for BMW showing the part of women in the workforce going from 15% to 20% at its maximum peak, and only for German people. If you include foreign people, the percentage is almost flat, as the percentage of women in foreign workers and employees is inferior to the same in German ones.

In some cases, foreign workers were not allowed. Sabotage was occurring, or the work was sensitive/secret. As far as German women, I don't think Nazi doctrine had anything to do with it. If her husband was in the military, who else would raise the children?

Ed, what country are you referring to, that no longer exists? My mother-in-law is Norwegian, worked in Germany voluntarily during the war, and was not allowed to return home in 1945.

This is the first time I am hearing about anyone volunteering to work in Germany during the war. I am referring to Poland which appeared on maps of the period as part of the Greater Reich.

For a time, the Arbeitsbuch for foreign workers was widely available. It had a photo, country of origin and so on.

A lot of people went working in Germany. Certainly in the early years. And i mean not at gunpoint. Good money and dont forget the very poor years just before the war. I must have a wartime documents with breakdowns of numbers of volontairy workers at some factories.
