Womans Land Army Girl
A report in a November 1943 Daily Herald.
This was a report about a 26 year old Miss Amelia King, who had tried to join the Woman's Land Army only to be turned down - because she was coloured. But a Wickham Hampshire Farmer stepped up and offered her a job on his farm, .Who was he ? She was therefore admitted into the Woman's Land Army . In today's world I find it odd that she was at first refused .Britain was in great need of farm workers and I wonder if the decision was general or perhaps a local one. Whichever the case Amelia got her wish . Is it known what became of her, it would be great to know what her future became. Thank you Amelia for your service and strong will. Alex |

Thanks Rolland,
Everything was new to me, never thought to search Hansard :) well done. Would like to know if there are/were any decendants. This could be her ? https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/...68/amelia-king Looks like she became Mrs Horrocks, wife of William Byrom Horrocks ? Alex |
Re: Womans Land Army Girl
Alex,
Amelia King died in 1995, Mrs Horrocks died in 1969. |
