Fliegerabteilung WW2
If someone is described as a Soldat in a Fliegerabteilung, what is his position likely to be? I understand 'Soldat' but can only find this type of unit referred to in terms of WW1. Any help gratefully received.

Thank you. What sort of role would he carry out? Is he likely to be ground based? Or is there a possibility he held a flying role? What roles would be covered by the term Fliegerabteilung?

A page on Andy Mitchell's great site, using information provided by Larry de Zeng, would suggest that a Fliegerabteilung could have been a pilot training section of a Luftwaffe signals school http://www.wiki.luftwaffedata.co.uk/...ichtenschule_4 More general information about what appears to have been the largest such school can be found below: Luftnachrichtenschule Halle - Informationen, Beiträge, Artikel - Inhaltsübersicht http://www.scheer-halle.de/hlns/hlns_01.htm Kind regards, Dan |

Re: Fliegerabteilung WW2
It could also mean that he was a recruit in a Luftwaffe "Flieger Ersatz Abteilung" which the units where called before the start of the war. Here he would have received basic soldier training that prewar took about 5-6 months.
