Hurricane on Crete beach
New E-Bay find. I believe it's the crash landed Hurricane photographed next to a crash landed Bf-109E black "1" of JG-77, first seen in Ishoven's "Messerschmitt 109 at War", circa 1977.
Any ideas as to the identity? |
Re: Hurricane on Crete beach
No one? any comments welcome.
There is a PDF with all (most?) of the Hawker Hurricane losses in Greece 1941-1944. Hopefully this airplane is among the listed. There are no Squadron codes so it might be a Hurricane being ferried. Or the codes weren't painted on due to lack of time. I tried to blow up the picture to see if I could see a serial number but could not see anything due to the graininess of the picture. Re: Hurricane on Crete beach
I think it may be Z4632 that crash landed near Chanea, Crete, 26/05/41.
What I am looking at is the background landmass at the middle left side of the picture. It has a rather distinctive shape. Compare it to this view at Stalos Beach, just west of Chanea. I think it is the same island. https://www.google.com/maps/@35.5193...7i13312!8i6656 Location of the crash would be roughly here: 35.516036, 23.940657 (copy/paste into Google Maps or Google Earth). Google Maps has a street-view walk along the beach. The island in the background is Agioi Theodorori. I don't think this is the location of the 109 crash. This photo shows both planes: https://www.asisbiz.com/il2/Bf-109E/...y-1941-01.html And this photo shows the 109: https://www.asisbiz.com/il2/Bf-109E/...y-1941-02.html The backgrounds, particularly of the 109 don't seem to fit the Stalos Beach location. |
Re: Hurricane on Crete beach
Thank you sir for that information. After looking at the information you presented, I believe you are correct. Then there's at least two Hurricanes on the beaches of Crete

Re: Hurricane on Crete beach
Just as a side note, in the book "The Luftwaffe:From the North Cape to Tobruk 1939-1945" by Holger Nauroth, there a photograph of the crashed Bf-109E with the caption: "after a massive dogfight [actually shot down by flak] a fighter aircraft of JG-77 was forced to land on the beach at Malemes." Under this picture is one of the same exact Hurricane with the same island in the background with the caption:"A scant 100 metres away on lies the British opponent, a Hawker Hurricane."

Re: Hurricane on Crete beach
Hmmmm. Maleme is further west along the beach past the island. It may be that the landmass we see past the tail of the 109 is actually the western and southern sides of Agioi Theodorori.
Compare the land mass past the tail: https://www.asisbiz.com/il2/Bf-109E/...y-1941-02.html There are some features that seem to match to this view seen from about here: 35.519323, 23.914309. https://www.google.com/maps/@35.5189...7i13312!8i6656 I suppose a "possibility", but that would still mean there were two different Hurricanes What was the date of the 109 crash? |
Re: Hurricane on Crete beach
You mean Hurricanes, no doubt.
