I had the honour of meeting him quite a few times at Martlesham Control Tower Annual Open Day. He was engaging, witty and extremely personable. It is the Open Day again on Sunday and I was only wondering earlier today whether he would be there.

I remember him turning up in this ramshackle old car with the trailer on the back and dressed in a smart pinstripe suit. I never saw him in anything else. Everyone worried about him getting home, a gentleman in his early/mid 90's. He was as cool as a cucumber. It is the Open Day again on Sunday and I was only wondering earlier today whether he would be there. Heard the news in the last hour.

Worth a hundred of most of us. RIP and thanks for everything sir.
