Ju 88 D-5 Trop, werk 430048, F6+HH

I tried to find details of this loss onto the MAW - volume 2, but got no joy.

This machine was supposed to have fallen to Sea Hurricanes Mark IB from the HMS Eagle. I only found an Italian trimotor claimed that day by Sub-Lt. Crosley.

Who were the pilots of 801 NAS that claimed Hauptmann Dr. Büsen that day?

Is there a reference to the combat (NAS Combat Report) at NARA or in other books?

I do not have MALTA, The Spitfire year, 1942...which seems to contain more details of this 13 June 1942.

Any help in identifying the Allied pilot(s) that claimed Büsen is most welcomed.

A.

Adriano,

See Malta, the Spitfire Year pg 325.

Sub Lts Parish and Blanchard of 801 Sqdn. On patrol and at 14.05 hrs directed to a "shadower" seen from the carrier. Attacking from out of the sun.

They only claimed the aircraft as damaged.

Dear Andy,

My gratitude for your kind help and identification of the airmen that claimed Dr. Büsen.

Definetely, I shall acquire one sample of the magnificent book MALTA, The Spitfire Year, 1942.

Just a confirmation: Parish and Blanchard were from 801 or 803 NAS? I first thought they were from 801

I know this is from Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Ea...attle_of_Malta ) but....

"Eagle disembarked all of her aircraft, except for her four Sea Hurricanes, to make room for 31 Spitfires and flew them off on 3 June during Operation Style. Another 32 were flown off on 9 June during Operation Salient. Later in the month, the ship provided air cover for another convoy, Operation Harpoon, which departed for Malta at the same time as the Operation Vigorous convoy did, from the opposite direction. A dozen Sea Hurricanes of 801 Squadron and four Fulmars from 807 Squadron reinforced the four Sea Hurricanes of 813's Fighter Flight to deal with the heavy air attacks anticipated.[69] The convoy was subject to heavy air attacks by both the German and Italian Air Forces; Eagle's Sea Hurricanes managed to disrupt many attacks, claiming nine aircraft destroyed and a further two probably destroyed for the loss of one Sea Hurricane from 813 Squadron and three Fulmars.[70] The escorts reached Gibraltar on 17 June and did not make the next delivery of aircraft until 14 July when 32 Spitfires were flown off to Malta (Operation Pinpoint). During this time, the carrier's aircraft complement consisted solely of six Sea Hurricanes of 801 Squadron. Another 29 Spitfires as well as four Swordfish of 824 Squadron were loaded on 20 July and the Spitfires were flown off the following day.[71] Earlier in the day, the ship was unsuccessfully attacked by the Italian submarine Dandolo.[72]"

According to http://www.historyofwar.org/air/units/FAA/803_NAS.html

803 NAS Location

April 1942-January 1943: HMS Formidable

According to Naval-History.net HMS Formidable was at that time on duty with the Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean.

Altho I have info if 0880430048 was Trop or not, where does that info in your request come from? GQM or amendment does not say. NVM does not say either. Dataplate, Intel reports or Guesswork?
