Standford-Tuck 109 testing at RAE

Hi guys,

I'm trying to locate the date Bob Standford Tuck flew 'White 1' at the RAE Farnborough in 1940.

Most books say "end of May, or early June", but does anyone know of an actual date?

I seem to remember is log book is still in existance.

Is it on the web or RAF Museum, who might be able to look it up

Hi,

According to his log book he flew from Northolt to A.F.D.U. Farnborough on June 8th 1940 in Spitfire 9434.

The next log book entry states that at 15:00 he took off in Spitfire 9434 for a 50 minute flight at 6000 feet with Wing Commander Stainforth flying the 109.

There is no entry showing that Stanford Tuck flew the 109.

Perhaps there may be more in his biography which I don't have to hand at the moment.

He talks about flying against Stainforth in the '109, but then goes on to discuss his own flight in the same Messerschmitt.

It wouldn't be the first time that 'facts' don't tally with Tuck's log book, nor the first time that "Fly For Your Life" doesn't tally with the facts.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for that.
So it would appear that he did fly it.
I am surprised that he didn't make an entry in his
Log book though. I would have thought that he would have completed it.
Hope you are well.

Gerry

Just a suggestion, but would the ORB (Form 540) of the "Experimental Section, R.A.E." in AIR 29/768 be worth checking?

I only have the August 1940 pages at Farnborough and Exeter scanned, but some flights of aircraft (by aircraft type) and occasionly the Pilot's name and a/c serial are mentioned?
