Was it Stirling EE940 of 15 Sqn? If so:

Oblt. Walter Riedelberger of 5./NJG5 may have been the pilot responsible. He made a claim for a Stirling on that night, South West of Hannover at 23:17.

Hi Jill,

Martyn Ford-Jones may be able to help you. He is the XV Sqn Historian and has recently released a book on the Squadron.

He is contactable on the Mildenhall Register site

Re: Squadron 15 S/Stirling Bomber

Hi Jill,
I'm been researching a XV Squadron Stirling that crashed near to Godmanchester in April 1942, one of the crew (who survived) was Sgt Sydney Jordan. He went on to be a member of the crew of Stirling EE940, which was piloted by John Benny.
If you would like I can ask them if they would like to link up?
Best Wishes
Roger
