Ar-196 3 April 44 Tirpitz
I was flipping through a book on the WW II German Battleship Tirpitz and in one of the pictures of the ship taken after the 3 April 1944 FAA carrier strike was of a destroyed AR-196 in one of the ships hangers. I don't think this is in any Luftwaffe aircraft lost list I have seen. Does anyone have any other information on this plane like the werke number? or is this one no one knows anything about? Thanks in advance.

Re: Ar-196 3 April 44 Tirpitz
In fact four Ar 196 were lost on board "Tirpitz" during this attack. They were:
Ar 196A-5 W.Nr. 100441 T3+BH Ar 196A-5 W.Nr. 100449 T3+HH Ar 196A-5 W.Nr. 100440 T3+FK Ar 196A-3 W.Nr. 0267 T3+IK The following crewmembers were injured: Ltn. Hans-Jürgen Beusse Ltn. (M) Rolf Wagner Ltn. (M) Erhard Koell Uffz. Gustav Höfs (mechanic) All four aircraft were reported 95% damaged (= total loss). They all belonged to Bordfliegerstaffel 1./196. The reason for aircraft carrying both H for 1. Staffel and K for 2. Staffel, is that the number of aircraft serving with 1./196 was so large that they had to use both H and K marked aircraft. On 01.04.44 the number og aircraft in 1./196 stood at 17 Ar 196A-3 + 7 Ar 196A-5= total 24 aircraft. |
