12./JG 2 Emblem on Bf-109G-1 high-altitude fighters

Hello,

I refer to Karl Ries' book 'Photo Collection - Luftwaffe Embleme 1935-1945', with a contemporary photo of the above emblem (A silver (the Luftwaffe) eagle carrying a tattered British roundel), and short description that refers to the emblem being applied on the engine cowling (port side only) on one of the unit's Bf109G-1 high-altitude fighters.

On Michael Holms web-site I've come across two units with this designation, as follows:

a. 12./JG 2 attached to I./JG 2 from 01.01. 1943, and renamed 4./JG 2 on 21.09.1943, and
b. Newly formed 12./JG 2 that became a part of the third Gruppe expanded to 4 Staffeln on the above September date.

Providing that Karl Ries' reference to 12./JG 2 is correct... Could someone please help me to put the emblem in the correct time-frame? Which one of the above units, if any, was equipped with the Hoechenjaeger?

Any response that could help me shed some light on the above will be very much appreciated.

Regards,
Sidney

Hi Sidney,

11./JG 2 was originally designated 11.(Höh.)/JG 2

check the following links (also from Michael Holm's site) for aircraft types assigned to the unit.

Hi Andy,

Many thanks for your reply.

It would appear that Bf-109G-1 was in short supply with 12./JG 2, while there was also 11.(Hoechen)/JG 2 in existence equipped with the above high-altitude fighters roughly in the same time-frame. Could this be case of the emblem/unit misidentification?

Best regards,
Sidney

Hi Sidney,

Both JG 2 and JG 26 had staffeln specifically designated as Höhen Staffeln (at least originally) and these were 11.(Höhen)/JG 2 and 11.(Höhen)/JG 26. As to whether it's a case of emblem or unit misidentification I don't know the answer.

Hi Andy,

I was just trying to verify the existing references to the 12./JG 2 emblem because the photographic evidence is very limited.

Thank you for your reply, it is much appreciated.

Regards,
Sidney
