Bf109G-6 Armament Question
I've pondered this for a while but never found the answer so I was wondering if any helpful souls on here could assist me with this.
The 109G-6 had two different 30mm cannon variants to my understanding, that being the U4 with the nose cannon and the R4 with the underwing cannon pods. I just wanted to ask if it was ever possible for the G-6 to fly with both of these variants spliced together effectively giving the aircraft 3x 30mm cannons or whether it wouldn't have been feasible until a later model of the 109 was produced. |
Re: Bf109G-6 Armament Question
With the two underwing pods it would have been an R6.

Re: Bf109G-6 Armament Question
The 30mm underwing pods never reached service. The normal underwing pods carried MG151/20 20mm cannons (R6). Andy

Re: Bf109G-6 Armament Question
Bad info on my part, the R6 mod was with the 20mm cannons.

Re: Bf109G-6 Armament Question
Too much weight on those wing stations anyway. The mystery variant that I've always been interested in is the 20mm chin mount. I've only seen one photo and a brief caption. It said it worked fantastic, but never went operational due to concerns that mechanically primed shells would be loaded into the drum instead of electrically primed ones.
