RAF bombing of Malmoe, Oct 3, 1940

Hi!

I am looking for information regarding a miss drop of bombs over Sweden.
Which RAF unit?

The names of the crew?
Serial number of the plane?

This is the info i have and is verified with a little monument/plaquet.

On October 3, 1940 early in the morning, three bombs were dropped over Malmö, in neutral Sweden by an Armstrong Whitworth Whitley bomber of the Royal Air Force."

The target was intended against Stettin in Germany (now Szczecin in Poland).

Johan,

According to 3 Group ORB, in the night 2/3 Oct. 1940, 12 a/c from 58 Sqn and 9 a/c of 102 Sqn operated over northern Germany. Only 10 of them managed to bomb their supposed targets including those at Stettin. Unfortunately no further info.

I think you should refer to ORBs of 58 & 102 Sqns.

Greg

At this stage of the war, there was no navigation aid for RAF crews and they will often drop bombs far away of the expected target. In the above case, they were searching a port of the Baltic and bombed one... just the wrong side of the sea.

Johan,

In the book "The Other Few" (Larry Donnelly) it also says that the bombers had to deal with adverse weather conditions in the night of 2/3 Oct 1940, and with Laurent's observation about navigation, a miss was not far away.
