The emblem on the Do217K-1 looks very much like that of FFS(B)5. The white No17 on the fin is like those applied as a School's a/c number |

Are you questioning this maestro of aircraft ID? Everyone can see this is the initial test prototype for the DC-10. The reciprocal engines are simply there to confuse you.... Incidentally even my wife got it right....without hesitation.... Must say this is likely the most funny ID this Easter....even though many E-bay sellers try their very best.... Cheers Stig |

An Li 2 is most likely. It has a vague resemblance to a Douglas DC-3.

Re: eBay: German intrest
In #284 item 2, the Ju52 with dot-dash tail marking is probably from 3/KGrzbV50. KGrzbV50 stab and staffeln used various combinations of a dot with varying positions of dash to signify the staffel. 1/staffel was at 9 o'clock, 2/ at 12o'c, 3/ at 3o'c, 4/ at 6o'c with stab using no dash. KGrzbV900 used a similar system but was of a larger size and usually on the rudder. This information was provided by Gerhard Stemmer on LEMB.

Re: eBay: German intrest
Thank you, Snautzer, for the Flak towers................they came in all shapes and sizes, I guess. The poor gunners were sitting targets for P-47 and P-51 strafers, not to mention the Spits and Typhoons.

Re: eBay: German intrest
No, i dont think so Larry. German is as German do. For i.g. bunkers they had Standiger Ausbau formats. See pic
And as it was for sitting ducks: a lot of casualties came by attacking these airfields. It was quite the opposite |
Re: eBay: German intrest
Hi Snautzer -
What you says about standardized construction plans is true and there almost certainly were some for the airfield Flak towers, although I've never found them. But the low-level gun camera film from strafers and diagrams and sketches worked up from these by Air Ministry A.I.2.(b) show a lot of variety, leading us to conclude that the Fliegerhorst Bauamt had a lot of latitude on the design of these depending on the availability of construction material and other factors. But yes, the strafers did not like to attack the Flak towers! Very high risk. So tactics were developed on how to do it by minimizing the danger to the attackers, usually by several aircraft hitting the tower at the same time from different directions and altitudes. Many of the 8th and 9th AAF fighter groups had Flak suppression teams who specialized in this work. When one of these towers was hit at close range by all 8 x .50 cal. guns of a P-47 it was like putting it through a wood chipper - there was little left, including gunners. The two books below address this subject in some detail: Miller, Kent D. Fighter Units & Pilots of the 8th Air Force – September 1942 – May 1945; Volume 1: Day-to-Day Operations, Fighter Group Histories. Atglen (PA): Schiffer Publishing, 2001. ISBN: 0-7643-1241-3. Oversize Hb. 486p. A few photos. A statistical compilation. Wolf, William. American Fighter-Bombers in World War II: USAF Jabos in the MTO and ETO. Atglen (PA): Schiffer Publishing, 2003. ISBN: 0-7643-1878-0. Oversize Hb. Laminated cover. 391p. Well illustrated. Color profiles. Appendices. Names index. L. |
