Re: eBay: Allied intrest

You're welcome Bertrand and AndyMa. As far as photos being described accurately, it appears that most of the time, the seller has good information, other times, apparently not. Unless something is written on the back of the photo to provide some confirmation, but I have seen one or two posts here stating that the writing on the back of a particular photo was added later and not authentic.

Hello all,

This photo (#2, 7-1-2021) appears on page 232 of 'THE BATTLE OF FRANCE, THEN AND NOW' by Peter Cornwell. He identifies it as L9459 of 53 Squadron, lost on 11 May 1940 when it was forced-landed near Borlez in Belgium. The aircraft letter appears to me to be 'G', not 'C', but it is difficult to tell which.

I don't believe it is a 248 Squadron loss in Norway, partly because of the background. Also based on Ross McNeill's 'RAF COASTAL COMMAND LOSSES, 1939-1941' all three mentioned by Andy appear to have crashed in the sea.

Regards,

Martin Gleeson.

Martin,
Thanks. I don't know why I failed to consider L9459 - doh! As you say the code does look a little ambiguous. Are there any 53 Sqn code font experts out there?!
Andy

Could someone identify this Hurricane ? - I don't think that description of that auction is correct "This burning Hurricane was part of a Boston bomber escort, and was shot down when an ME 109 dived on to it from above. The pilot baled out and made a safe landing.
DATE - 27.7.1942 "
Maybe it is Hurricane BP120 of 33 Sqn shot downed 24.07.1942 nr El Alamein ?
