info fw190 lost Ardennes 16/01/1943

Good morning,
on January 16, 1943, an Fw190A5/U8 of 15./SKG10 crashed in a field at Avançon (Ardennes).

The Pilot, Lieutenant Eberhard Mertens is killed. I would like to know if any of you know the code of this plane?
THANKS
Joël

Hi

Lt Mertens crashed with his Bf 109 E-7/4612 on 16.05.1943 at Avancon.
He belonged to Schlachtfliegerschule 1 at Reims/F.
I don't know the aircraft-code.

best wishes
JoMe

I have never come across a WNr in this range before.
If it is valid, can I have the complete batch please?
Cheers

Hello Joël,

a quote from deZeng/Stankey "Carrier Summaries – Luftwaffe Officers 1939-1945":

MERTENS, Eberhard. (DOB: 16.10.22) 16.01.43 Lt., 15./SKG 10 KIA – Fw 190 A-5/U8 lost vic Rebbel (possibly this is Rebais (70 km E of Paris). Buried at Noyers –Pont Maugis.

MERTENS, Eberhard. 16.01.43 Lt., Schlachtfliegerschule 1 KIA – Bf 109 E-7 crashed vic Avancon due to involuntary ground contact.

Leo

15./SKG 10 was not formed until Spring 1943 and did not fly Bf 109s. Obviously some confusion with date, type and unit!

Re: info fw190 lost Ardennes 16/01/1943

Good morning,

I realized it was the same day. The city Rebbel does not exist but the city Rethel in the Ardennes does exist.

I know this area very well and a witness at the time who was 14 years old at the time has since died.

I had found this information in the books of Françoise and Pierre Roger. they report a Bf109.

But on aircrewremembered.com a Fw190. On the other hand, I don't think that Eberhard Mertens can fly 2 planes at the same time.
Thanks, I'll keep looking

Joël

Death card says is 3/SG 101 and GQM says Schlachtfliegerschule 1. Plane is Bf 109 E-7 Wnr 4612.

Still no answer to what range WNr 4612 belonged to?
