night definition

Hello,

How does one describe the period from 12 to 6 am in one word? When using night: this could also mean evening. When using morning this could also mean the period up to 12 pm.

Thanks in advance.
Timon

Can't do it in one word

Nearest I can suggest is early hours

That covers a multitude of sins

And should you say that midday is 12 pm? Noon is not after noon (pm) but neither is it before noon (am). It’s less ambiguous to stick to “12 noon” and “12 midnight”.

Alternatively, my Dad said the rule in the Army was never to use (say) “00.00 on Saturday” because that can equally mean midnight Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday. The answer was always to use 23.59 or 00.01.

It is "The Morning", as in "2.00am in the morning". As this is a Military sort of forum, remember that the 24hr time clock is often used which is self explanatory, usually with a date/time group and based on UTC, ie ZULU. However, it is also possible that the local time may be quoted.

Cheers

Definition of twilight
1 : the light from the sky between full night and sunrise or between sunset and full night produced by diffusion of sunlight through the atmosphere and its dust

How can you describe the period from midnight to 6 am as twighlight.

Admittedly twighlight often occurs at some point between 00:01 and 06:00 hrs, but not always. It rarely lasts long, the rest of the time is either day or night
