Henschel Hs 129 D

Was wondering if anyone has any info on the Henschel Hs 129 D variant?

Thanks

This is kind of a vague request. I suggest you look at Classic Publication's book on the type by Robert Forsyth. It should have what you need.

The author of "Hs 129, Panzerjäger" was Martin Pegg but the book is very hard to find and will likely cost a fortune.

Re: Henschel Hs 129 D

I have the book Hs 129, Panzerjäger it does not mention the D model at all only the A,B and C models of the Hs 129. The only place I have seen the D varient mentioned is on the wiki page for the Hs 129 and this is what it says. Planned version of the Hs 129. Powered by either two 1085 hp Junkers Jumo 211 or two 1539 hp BMW 801 to improve its performance. No prototypes were made.

Surely that is your answer? Martin's book is the book on this type so I would suggest there is no more information?

In the RLM aircraft production reports all the way up to 1. November 1944, only the A and B-1, B-2 and B-3 series ever entered production. In 1943 a planned C model is mentioned, but it never entered produiction. Needless to say, the D model was never mentioned at all.

Re: Henschel Hs 129 D

This variant seems quite a bit unreal. It's a small aircraft. Both of these engines, but particularly the BMW, would have required larger propellers and thus reduced ground clearance, i.e. a new undercarriage/nacelle. They would probably have required structural strengthening and airframe aerodynamic rebalancing, and the BMW was in great demand elsewhere. Given this, it isn't surprising that any such suggestion, if real at all, was rapidly knocked on the head.

I can imagine the job being given to a project engineer to knock up a quick sketch, to highlight the problem areas and perhaps suggest ameliorations, but not in any great hope. One of the lesser jobs of a design office is persuading others in the company hierarchy that there are good reasons why their inspirational ideas actually wouldn't work in practice.
