Loss of F/O W. A. Doyle, RCAF

According to 2nd TAF (Shores & Thomas) and Fighter Command Losses, Vol. 3 (Franks), F/O W. A. Doyle, RCAF of 132 Sqn. was killed in the crash of Spitfire IX NH575 (FF-F) on 20 August 1944. However I cannot find an entry for him on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website. Does anyone know why this is the case? Also can anyone supply me this officer's given names, service number, date and place of birth, etc.?

Thanks,
Tom

Hello,

It would appear that both 2TAF and FCL3 are incorrect in recording Doyle as a fatality.

J/22160 F/O William A. DOYLE RCAF. Died 14 March, 2010, aged 90.
Legion Branch,: West Point Grey Branch, Vancouver, Canada.

Legion Magazine Sept/Oct, 2010.

There was also a W. Doyle who was a Guinea Pig, but l have no further details on that. l can't access my copy of 'The Reconstruction of Warriors' at the moment. Could someone take a look and see if Doyle rates a mention?

One, E A Doyle, was also a 'Guinea Pig'.

The reason l mention this, is that Spitfire IX NH575 is recorded as bursting into flames on crash-landing, and there is remote chance that Doyle suffered burns. l won't speculate further than that!

Col.

Thank you, Col. The reports of his passing were certainly premature! Presumably he was injured in the crash. It would be an interesting story.

Jerry, many thanks for that link. I was not aware of the existance of this listing and it will be very useful to me. I could only wish that full names were given instead of just initials.

Cheers,
Tom
