What are the pros and cons of the following books:

-Wimpy by Steve Bond
-Wellington: The Geodetic Giant by Martin Bowman
-Wellington: Mainstay of Bomber Command by Peter G. Cooksley

I wish there was a good book that would concentrate on development, testing, engineering and performance of the plane.

Not a book I know but have you considered searching Flight's excellent archive for anything that you might wish to research?

It will take a little patience in order to perhaps find the thing of particular interest but Flight is very good for technical detail.

Wimpy by Steve Bond isn't bad, but I wouldn't bother with the other two, unless you are after crew stories.

Two books that I think are more suited to what you are searching for Jukka are:

* Vickers Aircraft Since 1908, by C.F. Andrews.
Great technical detail, design, uses and development of the Wellington. And because it is part of a' development' saga, the how and why it was developed (following on from the Wellesley) and where it progressed to (the Warwick and the Windsor) is all part of the story.

* Wellington Special, by Alec Lumsden.
Along the same lines as the Vickers book. Although not is such depth, as it does also delve into the crews who manned it. But it does have very good, if somewhat brief sections on technical performance, origin of the geodetics design (strengths and weaknesses), production, people, cockpit and controls, and types numbers and marks.

A third book that is right up your alley is (unfortunately I don't have it) is:
* Vickers Wellington Manual: 1936-1953 (all marks and models), by Iain Murray.

I have the Haynes book on the Lancaster, and it is in the same vein as that of the Wellington. Will give you all the technical detail you could wish for - construction, production, engines, uses, development, performance and so on. :)

The 4+ magazine/book on the Wellington (see review linked below) may be more along the lines of development you're looking for.

Unfortunately, I can't put my hands on my copy (possibly in storage or at the bottom of a stack). From memory, there were lots of photos and drawings, and it seemed to cover all the different versions - in differing amounts of detail. My only complaint about it was the tiny font of the text - made it very tiring to read for long periods of time.

Jim, thanks for the recommendations! Those Haynes manuals are a variable lot. E.g. the one on the Empire flying boats is good, but the one on the Spit is awful. One major problem is that while the original Haynes car manuals are filled to the full (small font, no big generic pictures, tidy margins), the aircraft volumes have loose margins, large font, big generic pictures). In other wods, a lost opportunity.

Geoff, that 4+ volume would be great, but seems to be out of print with used copies costing near £100...
