32051 Sqn Ldr A.C. Martin

Hi guys

Sqn Ldr Alan Martin was killed in action on 26/8/41 flying a Wellington of 40 Squadron.

Earlier in his career he had crashed and was injured whilst flying a Wellesley of 35 Squadron, circa 1936.

Can anyone provide further details, please?

Cheers
Brian

Brian,

Like Martin, you are going to need - F, H & C!

The incident with the Wellesley must later than 30 January, 1937, K7713, the first production aircraft first flew on that date. Deliveries to squadrons began in April, 1937. The prototype (K7556), had first flown on 15 June, 1935, but there are no incidents recorded for this aircraft.

Hello,

For the uninitiated - Brian (Cull) co-authored a book (with Frederick Galea), titled, Gladiators over Malta. The Gladiators were, "Faith, Hope & Charity". Alan Martin flew in these aircraft.

Hello,
The question was about a possible 35 Sqdn Wellesley accident circa 1936.
We have now jumped to Gladiator 1940.
Is the 1936 event now revised ?
If so then perhaps 21-06-1940 -N5522 crashed on take off.

Hi Alex

Sorry, we've confused you!

Martin was injured in a crash while with 35 Squadron (as far as I'm aware) in the mid to late 1930s - I assumed he was aboard a Wellesley.

That's as far as I've got!

Cheers

Can't find him on 35 Sqn via Flight Archives in the time line, unless it was between Cranwell/Eastchurch and Malta

Or he was on a familiarisation/Concurrency flight (temp attached)

Flying Officer A C Martin to Armament Training Camp Leuchars 1.4.35
A C Martin Air Observers School, North Coates Fitties 23.12.35
Flying Officers A C Martin to Electrical and Wireless School Cranwell 27.4.36
A. C MARTIN to Air Armament School. Eastchurch 18.1.37
A. C. Martin, to No. 3 Anti- Aircraft Co-operation Unit, Hal Far, Malta, 20.11.37.

Hi Paul

Thanks for that.

With his Malta connection he may have well been injured in a crash whilst with 3AACU!

Any idea on how I/we can find out?

Cheers
Brian
