Search for German Fighter Pilot
 

Monday 8 May 1944 big fight over west Germany/east Holland (target Berlin/Brunswick) between German Fighters and P-38, P-47 and P-51s. At least 55 German planes went down. We are looking for the German Pilot who did fly Fw-190A8/R2 or R8 with Werk Nummer 682 655 We found this on a small plate “ 682 655 HPS FW190” (HPS =Gerhard Fieseler Werke GmbH Kassel) together with a MG151, a MK108 and the BMW801D. This Fw190 went down about 1245 hrs PM and crashed at Lichtenvoorde in the east of Holland. The pilot managed to bail out but we don’t know if he survived. Does anyone know who did fly this Fw-190 ? (name and unit)

Hi,

the Fw 190 A-8 with the W.Nr. 682 651 was a a/c of 13./JG 3. Perhaps the 682 655 was delivered to the same unit.

I am sorry nothing on that Werknummer. Are you sure about the date, couldn't this be one of the 14.1.1945 crashes?

The 682xxx blocks do not start appearing in the losses I have until Sep-44. May-44 is a few months too early for WNr. 682655.

I have added a note on my JG3 loss list that on this date Uffz. Oscar Boesch of IV/JG3 baled out of his A8. Apparantly hit by return fire while attacking B-24's in the Goslar area, no aircraft details. Unfortunately I did not reference the source of this, but I think a lot of information is available on this pilot so perhaps someone could confirm (or not),

Werknummer 682655 is from a production block that, according to Rodeike's Fw 190 book, was produced in Nov.-Dec. 1944. Therefore this can not be a crash from 8.5.1944. It seems to me that 14.1.1945 is more likely. Could very well be a IV./JG 3 a/c, and by coincidence, Oskar Boesch was shot down that day too.

To Kaczmarek: Thanks for the suggestion but in the Losslist of JG3 that I have there are only 7 Bf-109 listed for May 8th 1944 all lost over Germany.

Thank you I’ll look for more info about Oscar Boesch maybe this will clear up something. Apart from that it seems to be another location because Goslar is too far away (250 Km) from where this Fw finally went down. And locals say that this Fw was chased up by two Allied fighters and not in fight with gunners of a bomber.

Thanks for your reactions. The Werk Nummer is 682 655 not 682 855. Anyhow the following two things are for sure indeed. The Werk Nummer is 682 655 because we found that small plate (now in the showcase of our museum) and the date: May 8th 1944 because I have a certified report of the local Air defense commander which clearly mentions this date and time: 1245 hrs. PM and location where we dug up about 50% of the a/c. So we can take that for sure.

there must be a mix up.....682655 is indeed the Werknummer and that Fw 190 was not produced before November 1944 so it could not have crashed on May 8th 1944 (the 682855 above was a typo of mine) It seems the LB report and the crash site don't belong together...? I don't know but this Fw 190A-8 WNr. 682655 built by Fieseler can not have crashed on May 8th 1944. Sorry....

Hi, guys.

I tend to agree with Jim P. and John Manrho on this.

If I should make a qualified guess on the unit, it would be one of the Sturm units, and in my opinion the best candidate would be II.(Sturm)/JG 4.

I have losses listed for FW 190A-8's 682656, 682657 and 682659, all with II.(Sturm)/JG 4, and although we all know that a mix and match with regards to WNr-series and unit deliveries occur all the time, it seems that the late war stream of aircraft to units were more 'block' orientated than earlier in the war.

Hello Peter,
The pilot of this plane survived!
He bailed out and came down at Beltrum.
He was slightly wounded and taken to the hospital at Lichtenvoorde.
Source: report of "luchtbeschermingsdienst".
I also think that Wnr:682644 is a IV./JG 3 aircraft,, 12 aircraft of Sturm./JG 3 were shot down 14-01-1945!
