Me 262 WNr. 130177 lost 14 July 1944

Gentlemen,

There are conflicting accounts as to who crashed in this aircraft:

"... It (3./KG51) suffered its first loss four days later (14 July 1944) when Stabsfw. Mosbacher [sic] was killed when his aircraft, W. Nr. 130177, crashed into the Ammersee while making a practice bombing run ..."
- Smith & Creek, Me 262 Volume Two, (1998) p. 360.

"...130177 Call sign SQ+WP. Me 262 A-2a. Stabsflugfuhrer R. Mossbacher of Kommando Schenck (I./KG51) at Lechfeld, was killed in this aircraft on 14 July 1944 during a bomber training flight in the Ammersee area ... Conflicting information states the pilot was Uffz. Bentrott of 3./KG51 ..."
- O'Connell, Me 262 Production Log, (2005) p. 37.

"... The first known loss to be suffered be suffered by I./KG51 occurred on 14 July when the Me 262A-1a [sic] of Unteroffizier Walter Bentrott of 3. Staffel, assigned to Kommando Schenck, crashed in Lake Ammersee ..."
- Forsyth with Creek, Me 262 Bomber and Reconnaissance Units, (2012) p. 16.

I have two questions:

1. Which pilot crashed in WNr. 130177?

2. What was Mossbacher's first name?

Kind regards,

Jim Geens

An Uffz. Engelbert Mosbacher was killed near Le Mans on 14 July but that's pretty clearly not the same man. There's no Mossbacher (double-s) in the German War Graves records who died in July 1944, nor a Bentrott.

Incidentally, there are only 18 double-s Mossbachers in the German phone book, 290 single-s Mosbachers and 8 Bentrotts.

That's interesting. It looks like he was a civilian company pilot rather than a Luftwaffe one. That would explain the absence of any war grave information.

Thank you, udf_00. That perhaps explains the unusual title of Stabsflugfuhrer.

According to the NVM the pilot of 130177 was Uffz. Walter Bentrott born 28 Sep 1919 in Kolberg.

Thank you, Norbert. Indeed, as Dan O'Connell said it is conflicting information.

I just presented both, hoping other info would be available later.

Does anybody have any information on Stabsflugfuhrer Robert Mossbacher's role in the crash of Do 335 V2 CP+UB?
